Role: Animator | Visualization Designer | Robot Development Production Type: Feature Film
I worked on The Matrix 2 and 3 for about 1 and 1/2 years and it was an insane ride. The first Matrix film is one of my all time favorite movies and the opportunity to work on the sequels with some of my best friends was an easy decision. All of my time on these movies was animating APU Mechs (Armored Personal Units) and Sentinels robots – as well as doing some camera layout and shot design work. This scene below is one of the major sections I worked on for Reloaded.
For Revolutions, all of my time was spent on the Zion Battle Sequence. This sequence was one of the most brutal of my career. Every shot went through dozens of iterations that bordered on insanity. The sentinels were also a very unforgiving character to work with. Each Sentinel had something like 100-120 controls with dozens of IK/FK switches and constraints. Even simple posing or timing notes could mean having to restart from scratch because of the complex nature of the animation rig. The APU was a dream to work with and I only wish we got to do more with them.
